EDUCATION MANIFESTO

Instructions

Split class in to two groups. Hand them an envelope each.

Instructions to read out as they move through the activity:

You are a student (gesture to student group) and you are the teacher (gesture to teacher group). This tree is your fellow peer, or your student depending on your role.

You will begin when you are ready to open up your toolkit. I will continue to speak to you as this exercise goes on.

Your tool kit contains your skills, knowledge, and experiences you have to offer. It may be similar to those of the people in the space. It may be completely different. It is your job to recognize your tool kit and the tool kit of the other person. Figure out how your tools can be shred to sculpt this tree in the middle.

This tree is alive. Its culture nourishes them and influences their growth. Your task is this:

  • Water or sculpt this tree with love

  • Water with knowledge about the world, about humanity

  • Recognize external factors of growth

  • Recognize internal factors of growth

  • Sometimes these may get in the way. Sometimes they are difficult to see.

  • Create opportunities for independent growth

  • Create opportunities for healing – emotionally, psychologically, physically

  • Find connection

  • Promote community

  • Promote self-reflexivity

  • Do not attempt to fix

Ultimately, your task is to help them become a better person through making yourself a better person along the way. Be and nurture the person that is compassionate to others, an independent thinker, and a community builder.
